Bus passengers get new information on service changes

A ground-breaking partnership between a voluntary group and Shropshire Council will ensure that bus passengers will now be able to get advance information on changes to services.  This new initiative by Bus Users Shropshire will fill the gap left over a year ago when Shropshire Council stopped producing its monthly Public Transport News which contained a list of forthcoming changes to bus services.

Shropshire Council has agreed to send Bus Users Shropshire copies of all the information they receive from bus operators regarding changes to services, and this will form the basis of the new publication.  Bus operators have to give the Traffic Commissioner advance notice (normally 56 days) when they want to start, change or withdraw a bus service, and at the same time send a copy to Shropshire Council if any part of the route passes through their area.

Bus Service Changes will be sent out by email every month with the April edition available shortly.  Anyone can receive a copy by becoming a supporter of Bus Users Shropshire, for which there is no charge - just email bususersshropshire@hotmail.co.uk.  For people without access to email a copy will be available at Shrewsbury Bus Station (Traveltime & News), and all libraries, council customer service points and community hubs, and visitor information centres.

Peter Gilbert, chair of Bus Users Shropshire, said, ‘Accurate information is a corner stone of successful public transport. Timetables in Shropshire can be out of date so we believe that this new information service will give people some extra confidence to go out and ride Shropshire’s extensive network of buses. The information provided by Shropshire Council will also enable us to keep our new county route map up to date.’

Bus Users Shropshire can be contacted on Facebook, by email bususersshropshire@hotmail.co.uk or by phoning/texting 07580 564458, or by writing to BUS c/o Shrewsbury Coffeehouse, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury SY1 2AE.
