Bus Users on board

Bus Users Shropshire has joined forces with Arriva Bus and Shropshire Council to boost the use of a rural bus service.

The 576 bus operates 6 days a week between Shrewsbury and Oswestry via Bomere Heath, Baschurch, Ruyton XI Towns, Kinnerley, Knockin and Maesbury Marsh. It has been chosen for a trial to encourage more passengers on board because it links two attractive destinations, Shrewsbury and Oswestry, offers a scenic ride through pleasant countryside, is ideal for local walks from the villages and is sufficiently frequent to allow people to hop on and off at different places.

The aim of the campaign initiated by Bus Users Shropshire is to encourage more passengers to get on board. In preparation, Arriva Bus has improved publicity by printing bus posters and timetable leaflets and Shropshire Council is updating information cases on the route. Bus Users Shropshire will be talking to passengers in the next few weeks about their views and encouraging individuals, and groups to use the bus to enjoy day trips and country walks this summer.

Jamie Crowsley, General Manager for Arriva Bus Shropshire said: “We really welcome this project which seeks to get more people on board a rural bus. The service operates through lovely countryside and calls at places of interest so should be attractive to people. There are seven trips each way and thus are plenty of opportunities to stop off and enjoy the villages or passengers can simply sit back and enjoy the view. ”

Shropshire Council Transport Commissioning Manager said: “If the project is successful we’ll look at applying a similar approach to other routes across Shropshire, most of which we support as an essential service. We’ll be monitoring the results and see what lessons can be learned by this three way partnership approach.”

The project starts on May 14th and will run for 6 months. Interested people and groups are invited to contact Bus Users Shropshire for more information.
