Bus Users Cymru congratulates bus company on ‘Cymru Clipper’ launch

Bus Users Cymru has welcomed the launch of a new co-ordinated bus network in South and South West Wales by bus operator First Cymru. The new ‘Cymru Clipper’ brand was officially launched at the Swansea Bus Museum last Sunday 18 May at the First Cymru fun day event. The event also marked 100 years of The South Wales Transport Co Ltd, the bus operator now owned by First Group.

Margaret Everson MBE, director of Bus Users Cymru, attended the launch and said: “I am pleased to see First Cymru really thinking about how people might understand a bus service network; bus companies need to win back users and get more people out of their cars.

“There is now a distinctive brand and the bright blue and gold colours will make these new ‘Cymru Clipper’ buses stand out making it easier for people to identify their bus. The new network map clearly shows where services go and how services meet up, mainly in Swansea, to make journeys possible throughout South and South West Wales.  It looks attractive and I wish First Cymru well in attracting new customers.”

Speaking at the launch Justin Davies, Managing Director of First Cymru, outlined their investment in many more new buses: "This is an exciting time for us and the people who use our services. While we have run inter-urban services for a number of years we've never previously taken the opportunity to promote them collectively as a distinct 'Cymru Clipper' network making it one of the biggest changes made by the company in recent years.”

Bus operators across Wales are making changes to their networks and are not able to operate as many buses or routes as they did, as evidenced by the cuts in parts of Carmarthenshire and Conwy this month. According to Bus Users Cymru, however, the operators that adapt and provide what the public want, will be the ones that have a better future in winning and keeping more people on the bus.
